PS4?

Never thought I’d get a PS4 again.

Back in 2017, I bought a PS4 Slim and spent thousand hours on amazing titles like Gravity Rush, NieR: Automata, Horizon Zero Dawn, and more. But when I moved to London in 2019, I left my PS4 with a friend, since I didn’t have much time for gaming anymore.

Last week, my friend Kimi told me he had an old TV we could take if we wanted. My flatmate and I went to pick it up, and just as we were leaving, Kimi said:

“Why not bring this too? Then we can play The Show 25 together online.”

He handed us… a PS4.

But in the end we found The Show 25 didn’t support PS4. 😂

How to upgrade PS4 with SSD

What you need:

  • A new SSD
  • A USB drive

0. Back up your game saves (I skipped this step)

1. Prepare a USB drive with the PS4 system software

You can download the software from Sony’s official page. Follow the instructions under “Reinstall PS4 system software.”

By the end of this step, your USB drive should contain the PS4UPDATE.PUP file in the folder path: PS4/UPDATE/

2. Replace the old HDD

On the OG PS4, simply slide open the top panel, unscrew the mounting screw, and swap out the drive. Done.

No need to worry about formatting the new SSD. The PS4 will handle that for you later.

3. Reinstall the PS4 software

Insert the USB drive, then press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep (about 5 seconds). This boots the PS4 into Safe Mode. Select “Reinstall System Software” and follow the on-screen instructions.

Once the process is finish, your PS4 will reboot and guide you through the initial setup.

4.Restore your data

Log back into your account.

If you backed up your data in step 0, go to Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Restore PS4 to recover your saves and other data.
